The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education has been recognized for their exceptional governance practices by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). SD113A was one of 46 Illinois school districts to earn the School Board Governance Recognition honor for their effective governance behaviors and their commitment toward obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively lead the district.
IASB’s School Board Governance Recognition program acknowledges local boards of education that practice good governance behaviors as outlined by IASB's Foundational Principles of Effective Governance.
“This recognition really shows that our Board of Education continues to go above and beyond in their dedication to their role,” said Superintendent Dr. Courtney Orzel. “The unwavering commitment of our SD113A board members to stay connected with our community is evident through numerous initiatives, including the recently adopted strategic plan, Our Purpose. Our Plan. While their dedication is not driven by the pursuit of awards, their consistent focus on the best interests of our students and community truly deserves this recognition. I am immensely proud to see their efforts acknowledged.”
Several initiatives and accomplishments were listed in the application for the recognition including strategic planning, building processes, enhancing communications efforts, and maintaining and updating policies. The Board also highlighted their commitment to being data-driven in their work through monitoring progress towards district goals.
The School Board Governance Recognition program aims to showcase how good governance creates a positive impact for students, staff, and the entire district community. It provides an opportunity for districts to tell their story about programs and projects that are improving outcomes in their local school districts and offers board members a chance to highlight how continuous learning, both by individual board members and the full board team, results in improved governance for the board of education and positive outcomes for the district.
“As a board, we strive to oversee the operations of the district in a clear, transparent, and efficient manner so that the headlines are all about the kids and their accomplishments. We take our responsibility to the community seriously and continually work on our own governance skills to show our commitment to the district and our students in everything that we do,” said Board President Damon Ascolani. “The work of a board of education goes beyond the regular meetings with a lot of time being spent studying the issues, communicating with the community, growing in our knowledge of school finance and other disciplines, and working together on concerns and initiatives that are priorities for our community.”
